• Question 24 *Which non-visual band did UNDER CODE produce?- answer A. RONDE
 • answer B. SPIRAL MIND
 • answer C. Bye²Regret
 • answer D. COLOREAL ZPT

-- Yesterday's question was which band filmed a PV at LOCKHEART CASTLE? The correct answer was Megaromania, who filmed their AURORA -destinies of world- PV there. LOCKHEART CASTLE has a website; see if you can recognize the locations that the band filmed at!

Unfortunately, I can't say much else about this bit of trivia, because I don't know much about UNDER CODE's other PV locations! However, if you pay close attention, you'll notice (within UCP and vk in general) that many bands reuse the same locations of PVs and photoshoots. I guess there are only so many cool European room and scary abandoned building locations that can be found in Japan |D

haha, this makes me feel a bit old. I was sure many poeple here must have been in UC fandom for AGES, because of how much they know. It took me more than a year to figure out visual kei artists were not superstars when I started out and band histories were totally unknown terrain to me until I started reading websites like JROCKSAGA and livereports on GLAMJAPAN. do you still remember those?

It's cool how all the communities (and youtube it seems! Come to think of this.. there used to be no youtube!) give new fans the opportunity to become visual kei gurus in just 2 or 3 years.

Everyone here started at a totally different time in a totally different country and still, the fascination is the same. It makes me happy. It's a bit like world peace. XD;;;; ....

Many people admire 90s visual kei and many love newer bands. But reading your history and thinking of mine makes me wonder... isn't the time between 2000 and 2004, where 'visual kei died out' the one which brought about many of the most unique and fascinating concepts? It's propably just because I'm a nostalgic person, but just like you described, the first minialbum releases of 12012, vidolls work with hide and ayano- the whole image those bands created at that time could (and still can) capture me in a very special way.

Almost everyone of the people from the scene who used to be friends with me fell out of this fandom a long time ago and in fact I only have like 2 or 3 people I talk to about under code(and yes my mum might be one of them wwwwwww)... but that's the reason I started writing in this comm not too long ago. (I followed it since ages though)

And I really admire your energy for Under Code! You seem like an enthusiastic fan, a scientist and a critic at the same time, (I hope those are the right words) XD Well but that's why I hope you won't stop being involved with visual kei.

And of course I hope UCP does not close it's doors as well....

(your talk does not bother me at all~~~~)

Today/yesterday was my sleeping day D: So looks I'm a bit late to share mine, but oh well ^-^''. My first UCP and also my first japanese band was Phantasmagoria :] (the band that I love the most). Back in 2005-2006 I remember seeing an old promotion of their Material pain PV in an old TV channel called Locomotion, when they were switching to Animax :[. I think I remember the not so skinny Riku (haha) explaining the meaning of the word Phantasmagoria, that was the first and last time I saw that video =/. Back in 2009 I had the chance to bought their history set :] and their "last concert" forbidden -Insanity of the Underworld- :] wich are the only stuff I own from a japanese band since my country is so great that you can't have dollars or buy anything on internet without an especial permission that allows you to spend 400$ per year :]

Penicillin are still around and going...well, I don't know about "strong," but they're definitely still going. For their last single and full album the band started their own record label: THAT Records. Pretty cool, but that's a sure sign that their stuff isn't selling at all (especially after switching between quite a few big companies like East West, Nippon Crown, and Avex). Here's their OHP if you're interested in their latest happenings: http://www.penicillin.jp/

I can't believe it! I've only ever known one other person that liked PENICILLIN. Somehow they manage to still be active... It makes me a bit sad every time I see them doing something new, 'cause I know they can't be at all popular like they used to be |D

Anyway, wow, didn't like VIDOLL! Although I have to say, when GOTHIC ROMANESQUE came out, I didn't like it either. But still, rare to hear someone not like them. Anyway, KISAKI PROJECT is a good band. So. I approve :D

I actually didn't like Nega, nor Arc, but it was a strange turn of events. Somehow or another I found ClearVeil on youtube too and later found out that they were also on UCP. At that point I think I felt like Kisaki was stalking me.

I used to like Penicillin =D I don't really know what happened to them though... anyway, I found Vidoll (Gothic Romanesque)! Didn't like them! Found them again... liked them! Tried some Kisa-puro... the end.

Yeah me too, it's more fascinating than I expected! Well, sounds like you discovered UCP through the big three huh? Not a bad way at all. That was a great time for the label!

Oh wow! What a unique way to get into UNDER CODE. And that launched you into visual kei in general?! I'm sure KISAKI would be honored to know.

That reminds me: KALEN, now there's an under-appreciated band. What's your favorite song by them?

Ahahahah, I love the thought of every band belonging to UNDER CODE. What are the chances that you'd see so many in a row like that?! Well anyway, that's a pretty good origin story! I'm glad you actually liked all those UCP acts.

Funny story: my VK exposure started with a handful of bands, beginning with Versailles. I saw them on a magazine cover and decided to watch a video of theirs on youtube. Granted they have nothing to do with UCP, they were what caused me to have an interest in the scene. The next band(s) I found were Megaromania and Metis Gretel. At first I had no idea that they were related: I liked both and had trouble finding both of their music (I was google inept at this point in my life). Eventually I downloaded their music and couldn't tell the difference between the two bands for quite some time (this was pre-Apocalypse, mind you, when their old mega-fans still liked them from being Metis Gretel 2). Eventually the God of Megaromania PV came out and I noticed that it said "UNDER CODE PRODUCTION" at the beginning of the video, which reminded me of another (praying that bbc code works here) band I really liked because they too had music videos that started with that text (Phantasmagoria).

Phantasmagoria was another gateway band for me because of all of their colorful music videos. I only bought their stuff off of iTunes (because the blog I used to get music from only had 1 album on it that worked for DL, and half of the files were corrupted too), so I only had 8 of their songs for forever. Once their collection albums were put up for sale, I bought both of them immediately and was in such a fantastic mood.

Getting to how I found UCP, I promise! Alright, so I loved Megaromania and Phantasmagoria and thought it was a coincidence that both of their videos started with the UCP text. Then I found a VK group on Facebook and saw a picture of Nega and fell in love with their costumes. I tried their "Quadrangle" PV out and saw that they too had the UCP text. Another band I found in that group, whose costumes looked great to me, was Arc. Once again, their video started with "UNDER CODE PRODUCTION." By this point, I just assumed that every Japanese band was signed to UCP and was shocked to find out that they aren't even that big of a label in the grand scale of things. Once I became involved with blogging (both writing, and reposting links from TW [derp]) I began to learn the logistics about how things actually work.

LOL I'm a sucker for cheap-ass indies-VK music videos. They're still more entertaining than 80% of nowadays' PVs.

My first UCP band was Phantasmagoria. I began listening to their songs in 2007. In a period of my life very hard and difficult, Phantasmagoria music helped me very much. So I'm very grateful to Kisaki and Phantasmagoria for their indirect support. I discovered Kisaki and Phantasmagoria through Dir en grey and La:Sadie's (yes, many years ago, in 2005, when I discovered the j-music, I used to listen only to Deg and Malice Mizer but now I don't follow Deg anymore because I don't like their current musical style). In 2007 I was sorrounded by several fans of Deg (and fake friends of mine ^_^) who hated Kisaki and I didn't understand the reason. I didn't share this stupid hate for the ex member of La:Sadie's so I began looking for informations about Kisaki and his history and I joined the fantastic world of UCP. My fake friends, when I began to love Kisaki, abandoned me. They told me that if I loved Kisaki and his band I wasn't a true fan of Deg and I couldn't be their friend anymore. I wasn't sorry to love Kisaki so I broke with these shitty friends and I'm happy with my decision.

Ah, those old PVs! Surprised they didn't make you run away! So cheap ahahahah.

Nah, of course I love that DOLL MANSION era too. They may have been cheap, but the band had such a cool style!

Oh, I love to read those kind of stories Very nice idea :D

For me it was a good friend who introduced me to Vidoll in 2006 (we were watching lives with some friends and I fell deeply in love with Vidoll, which I still am <3), which led to Phantasmagoria and 12012 and bit by bit to my overall fascination and interest in Under Code and its bands. Unfortunately that friend doesn't seem to be interested in UCP much anymore, but she did a great job in leading me to that love ^^

Ah, that's really interesting! I'm very much like you about being interested in connections. Individual bands are cool, but seeing the connections is really what made visual kei interesting to me. It really has a lot of history! Anyway, I think you're almost definitely the longest-time UNDER CODE fan here. Congrats (and thanks Mom) :D

As for me, I'm bad with details, but I can remember scenes quite well! Between DEG's VULGAR and VIDOLL's ROMANESQUE GOTHIC is when I went from vk hatchling to full-grown fan. So September '03~'04 is when I got into UNDER CODE.

I knew of the infamous KISAKI from early on, though I'm not sure how. Independently of him, I knew of that cool grotesque band VIDOLL (...). The final piece was 12012, who I discovered through Tonberry(?).

Somehow finding that the three were connected, I visited UNDER CODE's website (old eonet one) and was blown away. The extreme bands, the mysterious discography that seemed to be full of history—it sunk its fangs into me and I never forgot UCP. (Side note: I would go to the OHP often just to look at 12012's Shudder cover!)

Well, from then I was vaguely interested in UCP, so I joined this community. But it wasn't until handed over the community to me (around September '05) that I really fell in love. Just maintaining the community, talking to fans, and keeping up with news slowly made me more and more involved with UNDER CODE. And here I am today!

To finish off, I'll say that I've followed this label for a long time, relative to my age. I've seen fans and super fans come and go—the people I see commenting here now are completely different from the friends I started with—but I've been here, still loving UCP and KISAKI. UNDER CODE really is a part of me, in a very important way, and I say that with no delusion. It's something precious to me, truly. When UNDER CODE finally closes its doors, I won't cease to live, but it will be a very hard day. And most likely, although I'd like to believe otherwise, it will probably be the end of my close involvement with visual kei.

So, when I say WE LOVE UNDER CODE PRODUCTION, I'm really doing it with emotion!

...And I did not mean to talk that much! Sorry!

Googling KISAKI early 2005 for Phantasmagoria, i realised that he was Matina president too, and i loved some bands from that label (mainly Syndrome) and i too noticed that some bands i used to listen so much time ago were in the label, i mean Vidoll and 12012 :)

so the first UCP band i listened to was 12012, first favorite one was Phantasmagoria and actually my favorite is Nega

In 2003 when cure magazine started out my mother bought me a subscription and they featured vidoll (who were allready my favorite band and first UC one without knowing it) and under code a lot. By that time I became interested in labels and connections between bands as well and found out that bands I liked before (syndrome, madeth etc) were kisaki produced, too. So I tried every matina and under code band, loved them (mar'derayla and 12012 especially) and... except for some byebye visual kei phases sticked to that.

But I really want to know about you, inartistic! ヾ(・・;)

One of my friend stumbled on a Phantasmagoria PV (Unknow Zero Distance FYI) and asked me to check this out. Curious about this band, I made some research and found out the lineup which lead me to discover later on that their bassist was in fact a producer as well. That happened back in January 2008 - even though it feels a lot more longer than that!

I want to answer this question cause its interesting! Not for the points (cause I'll have one lone point and it will look weird XD!) But back in 2005 I think? It was 2005 or 2006 I picked up a French Anime magazine and they had two big articles, one on Kisaki projects recent live in Paris and then a two page spread on Vidoll! Not only was it my first Undercode band it was my first Japanese band too!! So Undercode got me into Jrock pretty much ;D

There was a time in my life in which I really thought I was listening to the same bands all the time, and I got bored. I decided buy an issue of SHOXX and look for more interesting bands. There was a Megaro flyer for APOCALYPSE, I loved the looks, and instantly loved their music, too. The rest is history. feels epic

I think my first UC band was Vidoll...I didn't even know at that time what label they're on (didn't bother looking). xD They were kinda popular on a local J-music forum, so I checked out their PVs (Boku boku, Occult Proposal).
